Al Jazeera Al Hamra: Walk Through Ras Al Khaimah’s Pearling Past
Discover the historic lanes of Al Jazeera Al Hamra. Archive photo (2016): Slywire / Wikimedia Commons, cropped, CC BY-SA 4.0.
Al Jazeera Al Hamra preserves the layout of a community shaped by the sea. Its fort, watchtowers, mosques, souq and courtyard houses tell the story of a village whose livelihoods included pearl diving, fishing and boat-building. Walk through the historic lanes and notice how different homes and public spaces fit together. The name means Red Island, recalling the settlement’s earlier coastal setting. Begin with the village’s visitor information, keep to permitted areas and respect the fragile buildings. Cultural programmes can add another reason to return, with dates checked separately.
