Al Hayl Fort: Fujairah’s Mountain Heritage
Explore Al Hayl’s fortified mountain residence and watchtower. Archive photo (2017): Clémence Jacqueri / Wikimedia Commons, cropped, CC BY-SA 4.0.
Al Hayl Fort brings Fujairah’s mountain heritage into focus. Above Wadi Al Hayl, the site combines a watchtower with the fortified residence built for Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamdan Al Sharqi. Its position helped keep watch over routes towards Fujairah, while the surrounding village gives the setting a more intimate scale. Look for the traditional materials and defensive details described by Fujairah Tourism, including timber, palm fronds and firing openings. This is a place to explore the relationship between a home, its landscape and the need for protection. Image: Al Hayl watchtower above stone terraces in Fujairah Archival photograph, 2017.
