Al Jahili Fort
Abu Dhabi’s Al Jahili Fort in Al Ain combines historic mudbrick architecture, a distinctive tiered tower and exhibitions exploring the region’s heritage.
In Abu Dhabi’s garden city of Al Ain, Al Jahili Fort brings together mudbrick architecture and the history of the ruling Al Nahyan family. Built in the late nineteenth century for Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, known as Zayed the First, it served as a summer residence and a symbol of authority. Look for the square enclosure, corner towers and distinctive circular tower, whose four tiers narrow as they rise. The restored complex includes permanent and temporary exhibition spaces, with a display devoted to traveller and photographer Wilfred Thesiger. It is a rewarding stop for understanding the architecture and heritage of Al Ain. Telephone: +971 3 711 8311. Photo: Zareen2753 / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0. Photograph dated 2018-09-14.
