Visit Wadi Wurayah's year-round waterfall in the Hajar Mountains
Fujairah's protected Wadi Wurayah, now UNESCO-listed, is home to a spring-fed waterfall and rare wildlife, and it can be visited on organised group tours.
Wadi Wurayah is a protected mountain reserve in Fujairah's Hajar Mountains, roughly 45 km from Fujairah city. Its centrepiece is a waterfall about 13 metres high, fed by dozens of springs. Geologists quoted by the Fujairah Environment Authority believe it has run without a break for at least 10,000 years, summer included. The reserve was closed to tourists in 2013 so nature could recover, and it has since been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, the first UAE listing recognised for natural value. Researchers have recorded more than a thousand species there, among them Arabian tahr, Blanford's fox and caracal, and a small fish lives in the pool beneath the fall. Visitors do not simply turn up. Access is by registered group tour through an operating partner, Fujairah Holidays, and the tours run on set days in the hiking season with limited spaces. This controlled approach is what keeps a fragile freshwater habitat intact. Dates, availability and conditions can change, and heavy rain makes wadis risky, so check the official Fujairah pages before planning.
